Whygold’s Weekend
… under this motto I present you my music tip for the weekend.
Maybe one or the other discovers something new.
Consciously listening to music is, in my opinion, as important as reading a good book.
Today: Fourplay

Fourplay is a contemporary jazz quartet from the USA.
The original lineup of the band when it was formed in 1991 consisted of Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitar), Nathan East (bass) and Harvey Mason (drums).[1] Lee Ritenour left the ensemble in 1997 and Fourplay chose Larry Carlton as his successor. Larry Carlton left Fourplay in 2010 and was replaced by Chuck Loeb.[2] Chuck Loeb passed away on July 31, 2017.[3] Already during Chuck Loeb’s absence due to illness, saxophonist Kirk Whalum performed with the band, who had also previously appeared from time to time as a guest soloist on Fourplay performances.
Already with the release of the first album Fourplay in 1991, the band was considered a “supergroup” of jazz. The first album sold over a million copies and stayed at #1 for 33 weeks on the
Billboard
-magazine Contemporary Jazz list for 33 weeks. The following LP, Between the Sheets, was released in 1993 and also reached #1, gold status in American sales and was nominated for a Grammy. The third album, Elixir, released in 1995, also climbed to #1 and stayed on the charts for more than 90 weeks. In 2015, the group celebrated its 25th anniversary with Silver, the production of which also featured former members Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton as guest musicians. In the U.S., Fourplay’s pleasing combination of rhythm & blues elements with pop and jazz has continuously received great acclaim from a wide audience since their first album. There have been comparatively few performances in German-speaking countries so far, including at the Schiller Bar & Lounge in Herford (2017 and 2015), Fabrik Hamburg (2000), the Jazz Club Minden (November 2011) and the Montreux Jazz Festival (2017, 2012 and 1999).

Fourplay’s first album is my all-time favorite, and Bali Run, the first number, my favorite. I think I bought the album in February 2005. It was a sunny winter day.
But now in June, at over 20 degrees, you can listen to the record with the window open. 🙂
Have fun listening to this album !
Your Chris Weigold
P.S.: Maybe you enjoy the listening pleasure together with a Glass of wine from our “Orchestra of Cultures Edition”.
